Republican Caucus Unveils 'Ambitious' 2008 Legislative Agenda
COLUMBIA -- The House Republican Caucus unveiled a legislative agenda of immigration reform, tax cuts, and spending reform.
"This is a platform that reflects the conservative values we share with our constituents," said Majority Leader Merrill of Charleston. "These items concentrate our efforts on the pillars of our conservative philosophy: smaller government, lower taxes, and building a stronger South Carolina."
This year, the Caucus' agenda includes seven items:
* Fight Illegal Immigration * Stop Hidden Earmark Spending * Tax Cuts for Families * Improve Roads and Bridges * Education Reform * Expanding the Economy * State Spending Cap
"The 2008 legislative agenda for the House Republicans is an ambitious one," said Speaker Harrell of Charleston. "Our members have worked hard over the past few months talking with citizens and learning what issues they would like to see our General Assembly take up. Those concerns have been heard and are addressed in this agenda that works to move our state forward and advance the lives of our fellow South Carolinians."
Speaker Harrell and other members have already filed bills for illegal immigration and stopping earmark spending. The other pieces of legislation will be filed in the coming weeks. Details on each agenda item are attached.
"When we pass these agenda items, 2008 will be a strong year for South Carolina's conservatives," said Assistant Majority Leader Adam Taylor of Laurens. "I'm excited and ready to get to work this legislation."
Since taking control of the House of Representatives in 1994, nearly all of South Carolina's landmark legislation has originated in Caucus agendas -- Tort Reform, Property Tax Relief, Income Tax Cuts, Truth-in-Sentencing legislation, Welfare Reform and the LIFE Scholarship program, among others.
