House Majority Leader to Senate: 'Pass Meaningful Legislation Now'
COLUMBIA -- S.C. House Majority Leader Jim Merrill issued the following statement today on the state Senate's annual propensity for inaction.
"This year, the House returned hundreds of millions of dollars to the taxpayers, passed a balanced budget, strict government spending limits, comprehensive reform for the Department of Transportation, and sweeping changes to our workers' compensation system.
"We are working quickly and efficiently on a slate of conservative legislation for our constituents.
"Right now, the legacy of the Senate is a $1 million Green Bean Museum boondoggle.
"I implore the members of the Senate to follow the lead of stalwart conservatives -- Senators Glenn McConnell, Harvey Peeler, Kevin Bryant and Danny Verdin -- so we can have DOT reform, an income tax cut, a grocery tax cut, and significant workers' comp reform.
"We need to pass this legislation now because we simply don't have time to implement our current plan of electing House members to the Senate so we may enact meaningful legislation."
