Speaker Harrell Moves to Advance Work on Jasper Port
Bill to allow State Ports Authority to head up project

COLUMBIA -- Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell introduced today a bill that will help South Carolina move forward with building a port in Jasper County.

"For our state's economy to continue to prosper in the upcoming years we need to expand our current port facilities. Building a new port in Jasper County is vital to the future of our state," Speaker Harrell said. "With Charleston's port nearing full capacity, expanding in Jasper County will provide our state's economy with a valuable asset. This new port will serve our entire state and it is important we have the State Ports Authority leading the effort on this."

The bill (H.3505), which is co-sponsored by over a majority of the House, gives the State Ports Authority the task of being the leader in this port project for our state while also encouraging private involvement and establishes a timeline for the port to be finished.
