House re-elects Smith as Speaker Pro Tempore
COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina House of Representatives has re-elected Spartanburg Republican Doug Smith to his fourth term as Speaker Pro Tempore, the second-in-charge position in the House.
"I am honored that my colleagues have again returned me to this position," Rep, Smith said. "Serving as Speaker Pro Tem puts me in a unique position to better serve my constituents in Spartanburg, the House as a whole, and the entire state of South Carolina."
Rep. Smith was first elected in 1992 and quickly moved into the leadership, becoming chairman of the Rules Committee in 1996 and Vice Chairman of the Judiciary Committee in 1997. He was elected Speaker Pro Tempore for the first time in 2000.
"Doug Smith has served honorably as a strong Speaker Pro Tem for this House," said Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell. "He is committed to supporting and spearheading the Republican majority's most important initiatives."
Rep. Smith has sponsored several important pieces of legislation during his career such as property tax relief, income tax relief, state spending limits, welfare reforms, education accountability, LIFE scholarships, judicial reform, government restructuring, Truth in Sentencing, and Safe Havens for Abandoned Babies.
"Doug Smith is a staunch advocate of conservative views in the House," said House Majority Leader Jim Merrill. "As Speaker Pro Tem, Doug is in a unique position to champion those issues and usher them through the House of Representatives."
Rep. Smith was born April 3, 1958 and has been a life-long resident of Spartanburg. He graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1976 and went on to complete his Bachelor of Arts at Wofford College and earned his J.D. degree from the University of South Carolina in 1983.
Rep. Smith is married to the former Alison Evans of Sumter. They have two daughters: Cameron McIver and Anna Douglas. The Smiths are members of the First Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg.
