Rep. Smith Re-Elected Speaker Pro Tempore
COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina House has re-elected Spartanburg Republican Doug Smith to his third term as Speaker Pro Tempore, the second-in-charge position in the House.
"I am honored that my colleagues have returned me to this position, so I may better serve both the House and my constituents in Spartanburg," Rep. Smith said.
Rep. Smith was first elected in 1992 and quickly moved into the leadership, becoming chairman of the Rules Committee in 1996 and Vice Chairman of the Judiciary Committee in 1997. He was elected Speaker Pro Tempore for the first time in 2000.
"Doug Smith has been a strong Speaker Pro Tem for this House," said Speaker of the House David Wilkins. "He is involved and committed and has helped spearhead the most important issues of our day from brownfields legislation to medical malpractice reform. I count on Speaker Pro Tem Smith to provide key leadership. He has earned the trust and support of his colleagues."
During his career, Rep. Smith has sponsored several key pieces of legislation such as Property Tax Relief, Income Tax Relief, State Spending Limitations, Welfare Reforms, Education Accountability, Life Scholarships, Judicial Reform, Government Restructuring, Truth in Sentencing and Safe Haven for Abandoned Babies.
Rep. Smith was born April 3, 1958 and has been a life-long resident of Spartanburg. He graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1976 and went on to complete his Bachelor of Arts at Wofford College and earned his J.D. degree from the University of South Carolina in 1983.
Rep. Smith is married to the former Alison Evans of Sumter. They have two daughters: Cameron McIver and Anna Douglas. The Smiths are members of the First Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg.
