COLUMBIA -- South Carolina's House Republicans unanimously re-elected Rep. Jim Merrill, R-Daniel Island, on Tuesday to lead their Caucus through 2007.
"I'm humbled by the continued support of the Caucus and will continue to do my absolute best," Merrill said. "Uniting 74 Republicans behind a common-sense, conservative agenda was an exciting job this year, though we still have much to do."
Rep. Merrill is serving his third term in the House representing the people of Berkeley and Charleston counties.
"Jim has done a great job in the first year of this challenging job and I'm happy he will continue to serve with me as we continue to work for the people of South Carolina," said Speaker-elect Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston.
Before serving in the House, Rep. Merrill served as the press secretary for the late Congressman Floyd Spence from 1989 to 1992 and as political director for the state Republican Party from 1992 to 1998. He also spent 1994 as then-U.S. Rep. Mark Sanfordâs district administrator. Since his election to the house in 2000, Rep. Merrill has been active in the majority by serving as a Whip and on the Financial Committee for the House Republican Caucus.
Rep. Merrill holds Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Public Administration degrees from the University of South Carolina and owns Geechie Communications, a public relations firm in Charleston. He was born to Mr. James H. and Annette McGregor Merrill in Pensacola, Fla. on Jan. 15, 1967. Rep. Merrill lives on Daniel Island with Noel Marie, his wife of 14 years, and the couple's three children.
Merrill will lead the House Republican Caucus, which was created in 1975. The Caucus took over the majority in 1994 and today controls 74 of the 124 seats with representation from all across South Carolina.
