COLUMBIA -- South Carolina voters increased the Republican majority in the state House Tuesday, ensuring another two years of progress toward conservative values.
"We started the year with 73 members and we're ending the year with 74," said House Speaker David Wilkins, R-Greenville. "This was a team effort and the Caucus is stronger than it's ever been."
Tuesday's election means Republicans now hold 60 percent of the 124 House seats.
In early December, the Caucus will release its priorities for the upcoming legislative session, which begins on Jan. 11, 2005.
"The Caucus is better organized than ever before and we're confident we'll be able to pass our agenda during the next session," said Rep. Jim Merrill, the House Majority Leader.
This was the sixth time voters gave the majority to the GOP in 1994, and Speaker.
"We're glad the people of this state continue to trust the Republicans to bring their values to state government," Merrill said.
