Hinson Named First Female Chief Whip

COLUMBIA -- Rep. Shirley Hinson has been named the Republicans' Chief Whip for the 116th Legislative session by Majority Leader Jim Merrill.
The Chief Whip is the GOP's leader on the floor. Hinson, R-Goose Creek, will be responsible for lining up votes in support of Caucus priorities and will help set the direction of the 74-member Republican majority. Hinson is the first woman to hold the position.
"I'm honored by the trust the leadership has placed in me," Hinson said. "This will be a big job with the number of major initiatives the Caucus plans to undertake this year."
Hinson will oversee the other GOP whips, which include: Thad Viers of Myrtle Beach, John Graham Altman of Charleston, Wallace Scarborough of Charleston, Ben Hagood of Mt. Pleasant, Bill Herbkersman of Bluffton, Catherine Ceips of Beaufort, Murrell Smith of Sumter, Jim McGee of Florence, Bill Cotty of Columbia, Ted Pitts of Lexington, Roland Smith of Warrenville, Greg Delleney of Chester, Scott Talley of Spartanburg, Bob Leach of Greenville, Jeff Duncan of Clinton, Adam Taylor of Laurens, Dan Cooper of Piedmont, and Michael Thompson of Williamston.
"Rep. Hinson has earned this position and her enthusiasm and dedication will be a great asset," said Merrill, R-Daniel Island. "I'm looking forward to working with her very closely."
Hinson, 55, works for the Lowcountry Graduate Center and a graduate of the College of Charleston. She was elected to the House in 1996 and is active in a number of Republican Women's associations.
