ISSUES:House Republican Caucus 2008 Legislative Agenda

Majority Leader Merrill announces the Caucus agenda.
The House Republican Caucus Legislative Agenda for 2008
The House Republican Caucus is committed to enacting a platform of conservative legislation that reflects the values we share with the people of South Carolina.
Fight Illegal Immigration The House Republican Caucus will support legislation to address the illegal immigration problems that confront South Carolina. The House passed three bills last year and bills before that and will work to make H. 4400 law.
Stop Hidden Earmark Spending The House Republican Caucus will increase transparency in our state budget by identifying sponsors and projects by name by working to pass H. 4346.
Tax Cuts for Families The House Republican Caucus supports a tax cut for married couples to show our support of maintaining the nuclear family. The Caucus will also continue its comprehensive review of the existing tax code to ease the tax burden on our citizens and make South Carolina more business and family friendly.
Improve Roads and Bridges The House Republican Caucus supports dedicating an existing steam of revenue (such as the sales tax on automobiles) to improving our stateâs roads and infrastructure and will work to pass separate legislation redirecting these funds.
Education Reform The House Republican Caucus will work to reform our three-decades-old school funding formula. We will offer more choice to our stateâs parents. And we support reform and improvement of the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test so it better serves students and teachers.
Expanding the Economy by Helping Business Small Business: The Caucus will work to provide market-based access to healthcare for small businesses to help them save money and expand access to healthcare for their employees. Large Business: The Caucus will work with the business community in our continuing effort to improve the economic climate of our state.
Enact a State Spending Cap The House Republican Caucus supports imposing strict spending caps on state government. We encourage the Senate to debate and pass, and the Governor to sign, the legislation that we have repeatedly passed.
